“Danny Boy” by The Irish Gypsy

May 2, 2004
By

McCall Farrell is a classical trained opera singer with Irish roots and a passion for many genres of music. She’s a 26 year old soprano located in the DC Metro Area, currently recording her first compilation cd of original & traditional Irish tunes.

Another beautiful voice I first heard on MP3.com, McCall Farrell has an operatic diamond voice as she sings the Irish American classic “Danny Boy”.

I was chatting with some folks today about the place of Irish American music and it’s place in the Celtic music world. The lyrics for “Danny Boy” were written by an English lawyer, Frederic Edward Weatherly (1848-1929), to an old Irish aire. The song was popularized by many of the old American ballad singers like Bing Crosby. Despite these beginnings it was embraced by the Irish American community and is an important part of the Celtic culture.
