Artist: Don Grieve
Album: A Tribute to Robert Burns
A mix of song, short instrumentals and recitation brings Robert Burns to life with reverence and joy. Don Grieve’s voice is as mellow and authentic speaking as singing. One thing I valued about his performance is that he knows his limits, so he brings each piece to perfection without getting too ambitious and blowing it.
Grieve and his accompaniment handles a good range of Scots songs, from the bittersweet “Ae Fond Kiss” to the energetic “My Love Is But a lassie Yet” all the way to a spritely military arrangement of “A Man’s A Man For A’ That” that is definitely going into my favorite performances of the song. The poems, like “Souters o’ Seltkirk” and “Wullie Wastle” are aptly paired with musical performances that flow with happy inevitability from the spoken word. Listen for mandolin, guitar and backup choral vocals.
