Review: “Agony” by The Tossers

Mmmm…this is a CD for the true Celtic punk lover. Yes indeed.

With roots buried deep inside the South Side of Chicago, The Tossers have been around since the early 1990s and have played with – and toured with some of the biggest names around in this particular music scene. This includes The Pogues and Flogging Molly–just in case you were wondering.

In other words–they’re not newbies.

“Agony” is a collection of songs showing this group at their best–with all that you might expect from a top-notch Celtic punk band. Here you’ll find energy, edge and that elusive power that sets a truly great group apart from those that are mediocre. Tracks such as “Never Enough” and “Traps and Ultimatums” deliver the expected runaway train of spunk and speed, while the unexpected pops up here and there on tracks like “Not Forgotten”, which has a softer edge. Smirk at “Political Scum”. Laugh out loud at “The Nut House”. This CD is for fun and frolic.

At 17 tracks there is plenty to like here–and enough verve to keep you moving, even on a slow day! If you love bands like Black 47 and the Dropkick Murphys, don’t even hesitate in terms of making this album a part of your collection. It will fit right in.
