Review: “Celtic Echoes” by Donna Germano

August 17, 2011
By

Pretty, pretty!

Lovers of the harp will adore Donna Germano’s “Celtic Echoes”, a CD filled with heartfelt music and delicate melodies. The album begins with a gentle rendition of “Danny Boy” and moves through 14 tracks total. Unlike most albums featuring harp music, this one includes some tracks that have vocals, adding interest to songs such as “Ye Banks and Braes” and “My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose”. A well-thought-out choice.

Germano began her study of the Celtic harp in 1993, and then progressed to include the classical pedal harp as well. (She also plays the hammered dulcimer.) Her training and skill are both apparent here, as her nimble fingers coax each tune out as if it were locked inside the strings and only she could release them. The collection of songs is good, and the balance of instrumental only and vocal tracks really worked for me. Sometimes an entire album of harp music can overwhelm the listener, but the fact that there were some tracks that offered a voice as well rounded things out perfectly.

This just might be the ideal choice for anyone who would like to add a harp music CD to their collection—but is looking for something different; where each track delivers something a little unique. While there is little doubt that Germano stays within the realm of traditional Celtic music sound, she is not content to blend in. You can tell that a lot of thought was put into how this album came together, a fact that is obvious to anyone who gives it a listen. There is a personality here that adds depth to the effort, making it a standout among harp music CDs.

Like I said before—pretty, pretty!
