If you are in the mood for traditional Celtic music that has a touch of modern flavor to it, The Nettles are a good bet for entertaining you with their musical sound. Expertly played instruments make this band an absolute pleasure to listen to, and their rich mix of fiddle, guitar, upright bass and percussion is sure to please even the most discriminating ear. If you appreciate the skill that it takes to make a band come off tight and well-rehearsed, this CD will be right up your alley.
My favorite songs on this album include “Seven Dancers” and “Elzic’s Farewell/Paddy On The Landfill”. There are 12 tracks in all–most of moderate length. There is enough of a twist on the traditional to keep in interesting for the people who prefer a little something new, but not so much that those who are looking for their beloved sounds will feel cheated. Indeed, this is truly a Celtic CD that many people would enjoy.
The band cites a wide range of influences, among them Jerry Garcia, Afro-Celt Sound System and Thelonious Monk, so expect a few surprises. As I said earlier though, there is plenty of tradition there that you can sink your teeth into, so don’t be shy when it comes to trying this CD on for size.
