Gaelic Storm
Contemporary Celtic Music
by Catherine L. Tully
Gaelic Storm is a Celtic band that is based in the United States. The group began playing in bars and caught a terrific break in 1997 when they were cast in the extraordinarily popular movie Titanic. They gained a great deal of attention as the steerage band in this now famous movie. This notoriety helped them to release their first album which was self-titled in 1998.
Since then, Gaelic Storm has released four more albums: Herding Cats, Tree, Special Reserve and their latest, How Are We Getting Home. Their music has consistently appeared on Billboard's World Music Charts, and they have toured a great deal.
Their musical style has been described as high-energy Celtic, although they have a mix of dance songs and ballads as well. Their music can be referred to as traditional Celtic rock with a touch of humor.
The band includes Patrick Murphy on vocals, Steve Twigger on guitar, Stevie Wehmeyer contributing on vocals as well as playing the bodhran and didjeridoo, Ryan Lacey on percussion, Ellery Klien on fiddle and Peter Purvis playing the bagpipes and whistle.
