Best iPad & iPhone Apps for Travel to Ireland

By Corey Taratuta, host of the Irish Fireside Podcast When my friend Betty suggested, “You should take my iPad for a few weeks. Find all the good apps and then show me how to use them,” I hid my excitement by grunting, “Are you sure?” For the last two weeks I’ve been tapping and swiping my way across the iPad and iPhone testing over 150 apps… the ones that crashed, the ones that were copycats, the ones that had nothing … Continue reading

Irish Song Lyrics for St Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day is fast approaching. It is time for you to start warming up your vocal chords with some great Irish songs! But where do you go to find such songs? Yes, you COULD google “Irish songs” but you’d come up with a bunch of duplicate websites. And most of them got their start thanks to the success of the Irish Song Lyrics website. The website was started nearly a decade ago by Marc Gunn of the Texas Celtic … Continue reading

Profile: Orion’s Bow

There is a link between a World War I infantry unit, a Greek myth and a Colorado band: all three are associated with the constellation known as Orion the Hunter. In World War I, the 27th Infantry Division was called O’Ryan’s Roughnecks after the commanding general, John Francis O’Ryan. The arm patch for the Division is round and features a red circle over a black background with red stars in the shape of the constellation, a visual pun on O’Ryan’s … Continue reading

Irish Love Songs

A while back I was looking for a list of Irish Love Songs that I could play. But as I dug through the mix of Irish and Scottish songs that I play, I found that many were not quite what I expected. Maybe it’s the romantic in me, but I was looking for unconditional love. Instead, I found a lot of conditional love songs. For example: “Wild Mountain Thyme”. It’s a love song that says I’ll do anything for you, … Continue reading

Profile: Pandora Celtica

Devil’s Tower rises above the plains in northeastern Wyoming and stands out alone against the skyline in a way that makes it visible from twenty miles away. Comprised of basaltic columns like the Giant’s Causeway in County Antrim, it is one of the world’s geologic wonders. Pandora Celtica, while no more visible from afar than any other group still manages to stand apart from the rest. Comprised of musically-educated and talented singers like other groups, they are one of Colorado’s … Continue reading

Now that we are firmly settling into 2011, it’s time to take a quick look back at all the great Celtic music we heard in 2010–and there was a lot of it! Top 14 Celtic CDs of 2010

This was another great year for Celtic music. Celtic musicians from around the globe continue to release great Celtic MP3s through the Celtic MP3s Music Magazine. The CDs this year are better than ever too. If you’re a regular reader, you know I’m not as into typical Celtic music. I like independent Celtic music… the kind of music you’re gonna find in YOUR hometown. It’s down-to-earth and filled with passion. That’s the reason it becomes more popular every year. True … Continue reading
