Are You a Celtic Geek Too?

I have a confession. I am a Celtic Geek. I love Celtic music and culture. That’s why I publish this magazine and my award-winning podcast. However, I also love science fiction and fantasy. That’s why I record songs about hobbits, Firefly, Star Wars, Dr. Who, dragons, and cats. (Okay. Cats might not see to Sci Fi like until you’ve seen the art of Sarah Clemens. She’s a brilliant fantasy artist who combines cats and dragons.) But that’s really not what … Continue reading

Playlist: Gaelic Music

This month on the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast we took a listen to Gaelic music. If it was sung in Gaelic or had a Gaelic name (in the case of tunes), we featured it. Let’s celebrate the language of the Celts with this beautiful playlist of great Celtic music. You can find many of these songs through my iTunes playlist. Otherwise click the CD link to find what you can through Amazon. You will love this music. Enjoy! “Aoife … Continue reading

Song By Song: The Minstrel Boy

Author’s Note: Okay. I’m sorry. When I said that this would be bi-weekly, I meant barring thunderstorms that knock out power, family coming, cleaning and other things that get in the way of writing. Please accept my apologies and don’t mention it again. My feelings would be hurt otherwise. Okay, before we get to the good stuff (my opinions), do you know of any really good resources that detail the histories of Celtic songs? I’d love more scholarly efforts than … Continue reading

Robots, bagpipes and Celtic music

Here’s a little quiz for you. What do the following have in common? Skoda cars, robots, pistols, and Vaclav Havel. Got it? They’re all Czech. Really? Mr.Havel and Skoda cars, sure, but robots and pistols? Both are Czech words which have been completely assimilated into the English language.  Now, if I were to add to this list of things Czech ‘bagpipes’ and ‘Celtic music’ you might start to question my state of mind. Too much strong Czech beer, perhaps. Nope, … Continue reading

Playlist: Celtic Music Freedom

July always feels like the month of freedom for me. Not only do we celebrate Independence Day in America, but in 2005, I turned music into a full-time profession. I even started my Irish & Celtic Music Podcast at the end of July which has gone on to win numerous awards. So in honor of freedom and liberty, I scoured my library to find songs for special Celtic Music Freedom playlist. You can find many of these songs through my … Continue reading

Spotlight on Celtic Music: Poitin

Band Name: Poitin Hometown: Plzen, Czech Republic If you’re online and haven’t heard of Poitin, I don’t know where you’ve been. Poitin is one of the hottest indie Celtic bands I found online. And they’re from the Czech Republic. The group was formed with a love of The Chieftains. They developed into the astounding musical commodity that blows away the Celtic Radio music awards each year, dominating over bigger named groups. The band consists of Otik on fiddle, Honza on … Continue reading

Scottish/Irish Pirates

From the Celtic History Newsletter: Although when thinking about pirates most people think of Johnny Depp, tricorn hats and Captain Hook, pirates probably appeared on the scene shortly after people started transporting valued goods via boat. We thought it might be fun to take a look at some of the colorful figures who came from Ireland and Scotland. Thorbjorn Thorsteinsson (executed 1158) Aka Thorbjorn the Clerk. In spite of the fact that his brother-in-law Sweyn attacked his cousin and and caused … Continue reading

THE IRISH TEXANS

SOUTH TEXAS IRISH I used to play a great little pub in Corpus Christi called, Cassidys Irish Pub. The owner of the pub, Les Cassidy is a good guy; an interesting man with a real love for local history. He told me about the Irish Colonies of early Texas, and the Irish immigrant role in the settling of South Texas. Before I met Les, I had not been aware of the cross cultural influence, nor of the history of long … Continue reading
