Robots, bagpipes and Celtic music

Here’s a little quiz for you. What do the following have in common? Skoda cars, robots, pistols, and Vaclav Havel. Got it? They’re all Czech. Really? Mr.Havel and Skoda cars, sure, but robots and pistols? Both are Czech words which have been completely assimilated into the English language.  Now, if I were to add to this list of things Czech ‘bagpipes’ and ‘Celtic music’ you might start to question my state of mind. Too much strong Czech beer, perhaps. Nope, … Continue reading

Review: “Bofiguifluki” by Poitin

Celtic Radio named this CD as “Album of the Year” in 2010 and it’s easy to see why once you give it a listen. The album stomps right out of the gate with the first track, Emily, and the ride from there includes many great tracks such as “Four Drunken Maidens”, “Blue Chinese Lantern” and “Next Market Day”. With 15 songs in all, this traditional Celtic music collection is a pleasure to listen to. I was curious about the name … Continue reading

MP3 “Paddy Murphy” by The Merry Wives of Windsor

The Merry Wives of Windsor is an all-female folk band based in California. Blending elements of North American, British Isles, and Contemporary Folk music, the foundation of the Merry Wives’ sound is rich four- and five-part vocal harmonies, with support and ornamentation by acoustic folk instruments. A collaborative group, the Wives bring a unique sensibility to every song they perform, from traditional Irish pieces, to original compositions that range from beautiful to bawdy. Artist: The Merry Wives of Windsor Facebook … Continue reading

Review: “Everything is Alright” (2008) by Burning Bridget Cleary

When the opportunity came up for me to review “Everything is Alright” by Burning Bridget Cleary, I jumped right on it. This Philadelphia based act has been performing in and around the Lehigh Valley for quite some time, but I had only watched them perform a few times up until the time of this review. I figured it was time that I gave these “local” musicians an honest listen. After receiving the album, I gave it a number of listens. … Continue reading

MP3: “Pass the Tankard, Wench (Gael’s Reel)” By Sylvia Platypus

Sylvia Platypus is Philadelphia’s (and possibly the world’s) only psycho-Celtic glam-blues band. Burn’s supper at the Avalon Ballroom would sound something like this. Take the vocal mannerisms reminiscent of Edith Piaf and John Lee Hooker and combine them with a stage presence that is equal parts James Brown and Judy Garland, and you have some idea of Janet Bressler’s lead-singer style . Add the soul-searing Waddy Wachtel-meets-Brian May guitar work of Bill Barone (formerly of the ’70′s era German symphonic rock … Continue reading

MP3: “Drill Ye Tarrier, Drill” By Trip McCool

“Trip McCool” is my slightly altered ego. He is the man I try to be, or would like to be. It all relates to a revelation I had. I, Dennis Dougherty was standing on county lane in Donegal, Ireland staring at an old cottage. It was only two rooms separated by a wall with a fireplace in it. The roof was gone, the windows broken and the wood frames rotted away. Trees and bushes overgrew the little building…no longer needed. … Continue reading

MP3: “Orders” by Shillaly Brothers

Out of Manhattan Beach, California comes The Shillaly Brothers. They are a band of Americans of Irish descent playing music inspired from our ancestors. The Shillaly Brothers started as a two-piece band on the fly, just a guitar and a penny whistle. These days they are a four-man-band, with accordion, mandolin, Irish bouzouki, guitar, penny whistle, and of course the only band we know of in the genre with a lead Ukulele player! This gives a nice combination of American … Continue reading

Review: The Snake by Shane MacGowan and The Popes

There are precious few styles of Celtic that I don’t like, and infinitely more that I enjoy.  I like all the usual stuff, beautiful lilting voices, traditional instruments and in short the works. But what really seems to me to be the heart of Celtic is angry men singing about women, beer and rebelling against the British. And Lord have mercy on “The Snake” Shane MacGowan delivers that, and in the best way possible. It is a high-powered, eclectic effort … Continue reading

MP3: “Ar Hyd Y Nos” By Navan

Navan is a visionary quartet of Celtic traditional singers performing exclusively in the native tongues of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany and the Isle of Man. From shimmering Irish lullabies, to spine-chilling Breton laments or euphoric, rapid-fire Scottish mouth music, Navan’s sound and repertoire reflect the diversity of the related but distinctive musical traditions we today call “Celtic.” Artist: Navan Facebook Fan Page: Navan Buy CD: Òran nan Tonn Download MP3: “Ar Hyd Y Nos” Hometown: Madison, WI, USA Similiar: … Continue reading
