Review: “Drunken Piper” by First Highland Watch

First Highland Watch has put together a great collection of songs here with a backbone of bagpipes that will please any Celtic music lover. The album runs from Celtic rock to Celtic punk, with songs like “Godzilla” (but with the bagpipes!) and Johnny B. Goode (and, yes–with bagpipes!). The gem of the bunch has to be the title track though. “Drunken Piper” is a great play on the song “Drunken Sailor” – and it’s done extremely well. Originally a bagpipe … Continue reading

MP3: “The Bear and the Maiden Fair” By Irish Moutarde

Origins of the project Irish Moutarde was founded in July 2009 by Mathieu Audet, Fréréric Audette, Jérôme Bélanger, Andrée-Anne Hallé and Sébastien Malenfant. These guys were (and still are) members of a progressive-metal band named Eerie. Frédéric, Jérôme and Sébastien have been playing music together for a long time, but it was in July 2007 that Mathieu joined the trio. For a year and a half, they composed and edited the material, always in the meantime in search of a … Continue reading

Review: The Snake by Shane MacGowan and The Popes

There are precious few styles of Celtic that I don’t like, and infinitely more that I enjoy.  I like all the usual stuff, beautiful lilting voices, traditional instruments and in short the works. But what really seems to me to be the heart of Celtic is angry men singing about women, beer and rebelling against the British. And Lord have mercy on “The Snake” Shane MacGowan delivers that, and in the best way possible. It is a high-powered, eclectic effort … Continue reading

MP3: “Going Back To Ireland” By The Bloody Irish Boys

The Bloody Irish Boys are best described as a drinking group with a music problem. The band was started by front man Shayne in 2003 and they are a hard drinking, working band still going strong today. They strive to preserve the sound of their roots and pay tribute to the bands before them. This was evident when they released their first album Drunk Rock in 2005 which featured many original songs mixing traditional celtic, bluegrass, punk, and metal. They … Continue reading

Review: “Off the Wagon – Volume 2″ by Icewagon FLU

The grit and grime of Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly with the traditional chops of The Young Dubliners and a bit of funk and a bit of Jazz thrown in for good measure, that is Icewagon FLU.  Coming on the scene in 2001, Icewagon FLU quickly made a name for themselves by being that band that is hard to peg into any one genre.  Now, 11 years and 7 albums later they still hold true to the simple goal of … Continue reading

Old Dirt Road by Lexington Field

As soon as I got Old Dirt Road by Lexington Field, and I started to read their website, I may have (though I’m not saying I did) sighed when I saw that they bill themselves as a high-energy live show. A good rule of thumb is if someone says that they deliver a high-energy show, then they are probably terrible at bringing that energy to a studio. That is not one of Lexington Field’s problems, in fact if anything the … Continue reading

MP3: “Beer Almighty” By Firkin

The intentions of this well-endowed gang of Firkin are not kept a secret: to relax, to unwind, to make you dance, to fill up every walking and laying human being with energy and beer.
‘The band plays the kind of music to which you can’t wait to dance, that snaps sparks to knees and under feet, that calls screams and roars out of the throats from festival stages to pubs, anywhere. There’s noone who wouldn’t forget the boring daily … Continue reading

“Old Dirt Road” by Lexington Field

One of the greatest things about modern Celtic music is that it is constantly changing to appeal to new audiences.  San Diego natives, Lexington Field, mix Celtic rhythm, traditional violin, good old American electric guitar, and blend it with a healthy dose of punk to create a fun and eclectic original album. Lexington Field credits Young Dubliners, Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, and Great Big Sea as some of their influences and it can be heard in their first full length … Continue reading
