MP3: “Dicey Riley” by Marc Gunn

Kilts.  Cats. Science Fiction. Irish drinking songs. Nowhere else but from the bizarre imagination of Marc Gunn would those four elements be so neatly integrated. Marc Gunn–”The Celtfather”–is an award-winning Celtic folk musician. Armed with an autoharp, he riotously combines Renaissance festival fanaticism with Irish drinking and Sci Fi fandom into a satirical jam session between Weird Al Yankovic, Shane MacGowan and The Clancy Brothers. His shows are spirited fireworks featuring Celtic-style songs about hobbits, cats, kilts, Firefly, Star Wars, … Continue reading

Review: “Off The Vine” by Keltic Kudzu

“Off the Vine” is Keltic Kudzu’s second CD (the first was “In Our Own Country”). It has been five years since their first effort, and after you listen to this album, you get the feeling that they’ve been planning this compilation of tunes for that entire time. The band describes themselves as “Celtic music with a southern accent”, which should give you some idea of what this album is all about. From the Atlanta area, the musicians embrace their southern … Continue reading

Review: “Bofiguifluki” by Poitin

Celtic Radio named this CD as “Album of the Year” in 2010 and it’s easy to see why once you give it a listen. The album stomps right out of the gate with the first track, Emily, and the ride from there includes many great tracks such as “Four Drunken Maidens”, “Blue Chinese Lantern” and “Next Market Day”. With 15 songs in all, this traditional Celtic music collection is a pleasure to listen to. I was curious about the name … Continue reading

Rising Gael’s fourth effort, IV, is one of those fun Sunday afternoon albums.  You know the kind, where you just pop it in and listen with while cleaning or relaxing in the sun. The group hails from Madison, WI, and musicians Katie Dionne, Erin Ellison, Jeff Olson, and Peter Tissot are a powerhouse. Each one has fantastic credits to their name, and together they have won several awards in the Midwest and played Wisconsin’s Milwaukee Irish Fest.  Katie Dionne’s fiddle has … Continue reading

Review: “Off the Wagon – Volume 2″ by Icewagon FLU

The grit and grime of Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly with the traditional chops of The Young Dubliners and a bit of funk and a bit of Jazz thrown in for good measure, that is Icewagon FLU.  Coming on the scene in 2001, Icewagon FLU quickly made a name for themselves by being that band that is hard to peg into any one genre.  Now, 11 years and 7 albums later they still hold true to the simple goal of … Continue reading
