Playlist: Celtic Music Freedom

July always feels like the month of freedom for me. Not only do we celebrate Independence Day in America, but in 2005, I turned music into a full-time profession. I even started my Irish & Celtic Music Podcast at the end of July which has gone on to win numerous awards. So in honor of freedom and liberty, I scoured my library to find songs for special Celtic Music Freedom playlist. You can find many of these songs through my … Continue reading

Review: “The Parting Glass” by Jesse Ferguson

Multi-instrumentalist and singer, Jesse Ferguson, known as The Bard of Cornwall, certainly defies the sophomore slump with his second cd “The Parting Glass,” first released in November 2011.  This album is a wonderful collection of ballads, sea shanties and drinking songs, mostly of Irish, Scottish, Canadian, and American origin.  As the title suggests, each song deals with some type of parting which gives the album a nice sense of unity. The album begins with Farewell to Nova Scotia followed up … Continue reading

17 Free St. Patrick’s Day MP3s for 2012

I just downloaded a free app of Irish toasts from the Stout Pounders.  For some strange reason, I have the absolute worst memory when it comes to remembering toasts.  So I’m geeking out with this app. I can imagine it now.  I’m standing on stage during my shows at Shamrockin’ in Five Points.  I raise my Guinness high and shout, “A TOAST!”  I shake my app.  Reading it, I shout above the raised pints, “We think of all the friends … Continue reading

A Few St. Patrick’s Day Gigs from Celtic Bands Around the World

Long ago, in a dark period of human history, St. Patrick’s Day was not celebrated at all.  Soon small gatherings grew into large ones.  Large ones turned into parades.  Parties coursed through civilizations around the globe.  Now you can find St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in every nook and cranny of our world. I asked members of my Celtic Musicians News to tell me where you could hear them.  Here are a few responses: Cookstown, Ontario, Canada The Sheridan Band www.thesheridanband.com … Continue reading

Top 10 Celtic Music CDs Of 2011

It’s time for the top 10 Celtic CDs of 2011 list! There sure was some great music out there last year, so it’s pretty hard to do this round-up, but I’ll do my best to draw from a wide range of Celtic bands. Here goes, in no particular order: Celtic Pink Floyd   Too cool! If you think this wouldn’t work, you aren’t alone! When I first read the title, I thought…why?! But you’d be seriously surprised at how great … Continue reading

Review: “Celtic Pink Floyd” by Celtic Pink Floyd

s If you are the diehard Pink Floyd fan who cannot see the music being changed one iota then this album is not for you.  That being said, for everyone else, Celtic Pink Floyd, the brainchild of Damon Stout and Brian Stout, is an amazing feast.  It not only is a worthy tribute to a seminal rock band that was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but also shows the versatility of Celtic musicians and Celtic music.  … Continue reading

Review: “The Bright Shining Clear” by The Rambling Sailors

Rambling Sailors is a folk duo who have a musical passion for the mariner life.  They have combined traditional Celtic songs of the sea and some new tunes that flow together so well it is difficult to discern which is which. Gregg & Susan Csikos have been very active with their music individually and have now come together to share that experience in these ballads and tales of the seas.  Susan actually spent time on the Schooner ships in Maine performing her songs.  Gregg  has over a decade of Ren Faire accomplishments stretching … Continue reading

Review: “Beyond the Waves” by Ciara Considine

Beyond the Waves, Ciara Considine’s sophomore album, is as powerful and ethereal as the myths and stories of Ireland itself.  Listening to the album, one is easily transported to another world of hills, sea and mist.  Having come from a musical family, trained at the Royal Northern College of Music (with Helen Krizos) and having performed for years, the immense skill, talent, and experience Ciara possesses is more than obvious in her arrangements, musical versatility and the emotional depth conveyed … Continue reading
