Robots, bagpipes and Celtic music

Here’s a little quiz for you. What do the following have in common? Skoda cars, robots, pistols, and Vaclav Havel. Got it? They’re all Czech. Really? Mr.Havel and Skoda cars, sure, but robots and pistols? Both are Czech words which have been completely assimilated into the English language.  Now, if I were to add to this list of things Czech ‘bagpipes’ and ‘Celtic music’ you might start to question my state of mind. Too much strong Czech beer, perhaps. Nope, … Continue reading

Review: “Bofiguifluki” by Poitin

Celtic Radio named this CD as “Album of the Year” in 2010 and it’s easy to see why once you give it a listen. The album stomps right out of the gate with the first track, Emily, and the ride from there includes many great tracks such as “Four Drunken Maidens”, “Blue Chinese Lantern” and “Next Market Day”. With 15 songs in all, this traditional Celtic music collection is a pleasure to listen to. I was curious about the name … Continue reading

Spotlight on Celtic Music: Poitin

Band Name: Poitin Hometown: Plzen, Czech Republic If you’re online and haven’t heard of Poitin, I don’t know where you’ve been. Poitin is one of the hottest indie Celtic bands I found online. And they’re from the Czech Republic. The group was formed with a love of The Chieftains. They developed into the astounding musical commodity that blows away the Celtic Radio music awards each year, dominating over bigger named groups. The band consists of Otik on fiddle, Honza on … Continue reading

Poitin and Irish & Celtic Music Podcast Top the Charts at #1

Yesterday was an exciting day. Could Poitin, an indie Celtic music band from the Czech Republic, Top the Charts on Amazon and iTunes? The answer to that question is yes. It all began with a compilation CD by the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast called Irish Celtic Music. I say “compilation”, but in fact, it’s just two bands: Poitin and FIMM. Both are indie Celtic groups from Europe. Poitin hails for the Czech Republic. FIMM hails from Italy. Our goal … Continue reading

A Few St. Patrick’s Day Gigs from Celtic Bands Around the World

Long ago, in a dark period of human history, St. Patrick’s Day was not celebrated at all.  Soon small gatherings grew into large ones.  Large ones turned into parades.  Parties coursed through civilizations around the globe.  Now you can find St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in every nook and cranny of our world. I asked members of my Celtic Musicians News to tell me where you could hear them.  Here are a few responses: Cookstown, Ontario, Canada The Sheridan Band www.thesheridanband.com … Continue reading

Who Are the Most-Accessible Celtic Musicians?

One of the great things about indie Celtic music that no one really talks about is the approachability of the Celtic artists.  If you go to pop rock show, it’s highly unlikely that you will ever meet the lead singer face-to-face.  You’ll be lucky if you meet the drummer who was only hired to fill in for one gig. In the Celtic music world, it is completely different.  Many times the only way you will not meet the artist … Continue reading
