MP3: “Dicey Riley” by Marc Gunn

Kilts.  Cats. Science Fiction. Irish drinking songs. Nowhere else but from the bizarre imagination of Marc Gunn would those four elements be so neatly integrated. Marc Gunn–”The Celtfather”–is an award-winning Celtic folk musician. Armed with an autoharp, he riotously combines Renaissance festival fanaticism with Irish drinking and Sci Fi fandom into a satirical jam session between Weird Al Yankovic, Shane MacGowan and The Clancy Brothers. His shows are spirited fireworks featuring Celtic-style songs about hobbits, cats, kilts, Firefly, Star Wars, … Continue reading

Review: “Fortified” by Dun Aengus

If you’re looking for a good traditional music CD to add to your collection–there’s no doubt that you’ve found it here. Listening to the duo of Peter Andersson and Martin Rahmberg is a heartwarming experience that will make you smile from ear to ear. In other words, “it’s a keeper”. The best part is that there are plenty of good tracks to enjoy on the CD–to be specific–19 in all. From “Ballydesmond Polkas” to “Siege of Ennis” to the familiar … Continue reading

“Unshackled” by SloanWolfe

OH WOW!! You know that feeling when you hear something great, something that touches your soul. For me, it’s  the pipes! These guys are great. It’s just the thing that my wicked, weary and over-taxed soul needs.

Lars Sloan (pipes), Bryan Blaylock (other great noises), Jimmy Michell (pipes), Mark Sullivan, Matthew Williams (percussion), Robin Sloan and WooDee Gallegos (guitar and bass) create unique and recreate traditional sounds that inspire and move. And there is the one, “Fireside,” where they slow their playful sides.

This is the cure for the youngster in the car next to you playing that thumping rap song far too loud. Turn these guys on and crank them up. Show that youngster what great music is. I do this with several songs that I love.

For as short as it is, “Howler on the Bodhran” is great. They could have gone on for thirty minutes and it would be fine with me. I guess it’s the goose bumps I get, and the feeling of being taken back to a time when there were more things to be happy about than there were sad and depressing things. Then there’s the shadow pipes SloanWolfe does that gets you just in the right spot, and the goose bumps start all over again. I love it! But I have to say that my favorite is “Desert Storm.” I love how they seamlessly folded in several bars of America the Beautiful to push their point through to a valiant conclusion.

You will find, as I did, that these musicians can weave a tale of woe, happiness and triumph without even saying a word. When you buy this CD, and you should right now, you’ll see what I talking about. Enjoy, and thanks Sloan Wolfe. Wait ‘till the guys at work here it… I’ll only give them a taste, so they’ll go buy the CD.

“A Celebration of Twenty” by IONA

With a beautiful voice, Barbara Tresidder Ryan brings a many-layered grasp of the exciting to the Celtic traditions she sings.  Her multi-lingual talent also imbibes joy into every song.  I promise, I will listen to all the songs Barbara sings in Irish until I know them by heart. The flute, fiddle, guitar, base, drums and pipes…  I feel the need to create a new word to describe the extreme talent and the love of the music that Bernard Argent, Andrew … Continue reading

“Up the Stairs” by the Makem & Spain Brothers

Wow! I find the harmonies in this album heartwarming. The stories they tell in their songs are wonderful, and the stories make me want to travel. I’ve said before, something about their harmonies, but these men belong singing together. I have an adopted Ma, her name is Nancy, I call her NanoMa. When she heard “Nancy O”, she cried. I asked about her tears, she said the song reminded her of Bill, her first husband, who has passed. He called … Continue reading

Free MP3 from Shillaly Brothers CD “Too Drunk To Fight”

Out of Manhattan Beach, California comes The Shillaly Brothers. They are a band of Americans of Irish descent playing music inspired from our ancestors. The Shillaly Brothers started as a two-piece band on the fly, just a guitar and a penny whistle. These days they are a four-man-band, with accordion, mandolin, Irish bouzouki, guitar, penny whistle, and of course the only band we know of in the genre with a lead Ukulele player! This gives a nice combination of American … Continue reading

MP3: “Paddy ‘O Dash” by Stout Pounders

If there is one thing you can tell from the Seattle based Celtic folk band, Stout Pounders, it’s that they put on a good show. Not only that, they bring a fantastic line-up of original music and traditional Irish and Scottish music, filled with their own brand of energy and comedic twists. This is what makes their music so much fun to listen to. Their latest CD, “Live Drunken Nights” was recorded during their St. Patrick’s week tour in 2008. … Continue reading
